Nila

Nilā is the second film in the Ode to Exploration series conceptualized by travel accessories design label and creative director duo ASHYA, directed by Anthony Prince Leslie and presented by NOWNESS. Nilā explores one of India’s oldest indigenous communities, the Irula people and their marveled relationship with the most venomous creatures of the continent, the snake. Recognized as the snake people of the south, the film shares the story of Maasi and Thangaraj, father and son, and proud carriers of the Irula legacy. Their skills form a vital yet nearly unseen part of India’s healthcare system through venom extraction used to create life saving anti-venom. “Nilā” taken from the Tamil language translates to “enchanted moon” and is a poetic symbol and celebration of unsung Irula heroes––known as the people of the night.
